Checklist for Success

• Set up an area that is quiet and conducive to completing homework. 
• Check to see that your child is writing homework assignments in his/her binder-reminder. 
• Check to see that homework is complete. 
• Ask if he/she has received any papers back lately. 
• Contact the teacher by phone, note, or email if your child is not doing homework. 
• Follow up on notes or phone calls from the teacher. 
• Give your child privileges and incentives when he/she is doing well. 
• Take privileges away when your child is not doing well. 
• Attend all school functions. Know what is going on at all times in school. 
• Set high expectations for your child and monitor his/her progress.

• Binder Reminder: The Binder Reminder is an agenda planner being used by every student at VNMS. This planner will be used in the Homeroom/Study Skills class to teach goal setting, time management, and organizational skills. It will be used in every class to record homework. It is currently being sold at the Student Store for $5.00.

Long Range Planning: The start of a school year is the perfect time to teach your child this skill with these steps:

• Set expectations. Tell your child that you expect large projects to be done over time, not just before they are due. Tell your child that you will help with their plan. 
• Make a planner. Your child can use his/her Binder Reminder for long-term assignments. It should have spaces for the assignment's title, the final due date, and other dates you will choose together. 
• Discuss goals. When your child is assigned a project, talk about the steps required to complete it. Record them on the planner, and choose a due date for each. 
• Monitor progress. Check to make sure your child is meeting the deadlines. With practice, he/she will need less supervision. Use the Binder Reminder to communicate with teachers about your child's progress.
